ERSS Projects

What is ERSS?

Earth Retaining and Stabilising Systems (ERSS) refers to any structure, structural system or other means used to maintain the shape of excavation during construction, earth filling or cutting.

The choice of ERSS depends on factors such as soil conditions, project requirements, budget and construction timeline

Sing Lee as BCA Registered Contractor

ERSS Works are regulated by BCA, which requires Licensed Specialist Builder to carry out the works. Licensed contractors are regularly updated and familiar with BCA requirements.

Sing Lee is BCA registered contractor for both piling and steelworks, which are key components in most ERSS projects.

Sheet Pile Wall

A sheet pile wall is a type of retaining wall that is constructed by vibrating or by pressing interlocking steel sections into the ground to create a barrier. It’s often used to provide temporary or permanent support to prevent soil or water erosion, stabilize slopes, or create excavations for construction projects.

The interlocking design of the sheet piles creates a continuous wall that can withstand lateral pressures from the surrounding soil or water.

Soldier Pile Wall

Soldier pile wall is another type of commonly used retaining wall. It is constructed by vibrating steel beam members, known as soldier piles, into the ground at typically 1.5m distance. Steel plates, or concrete panels known as laggings are installed between the soldier piles. This also create a barrier similiar to the sheet piles wall.

It’s advantage over sheet piles is construction speed and lower costs. However, it’s watertightness does not perform as well and soil loss may occur at times.

Strutting Works

A strutting system, also known as a bracing system or shoring system, is a structural arrangement used in construction to provide temporary support and stability to excavations.

It involves the use of inclined/raker braces, horizontal members, or struts that transfer lateral loads and prevent the collapse of the surrounding soil or the structure being constructed.

Strutting systems are commonly used in conjunction with retaining walls, soldier pile walls, or other excavation support methods to ensure safety during construction. They help distribute the load and resist lateral pressures, ensuring that the excavation remains stable and the construction process can proceed safely.

Other ERSS Systems

There are other ERSS systems that are designed to provide support and stability for excavations, slopes and structures. Some other ERSS systems that we perform are:

Soil Nail System
This technique involves inserting grouted reinforcing bars, known as soil nails into slope or excavation to provide additional stability.

Shotcrete or Guniting Wall
This construction technique where concrete is pneumatically sprayed onto a surface at high velocity. It is also known as sprayed conrete or gunite wall.

4 key areas in the selection of contractor

01

Schedule and Resources

All construction projects are running on tight schedules. Being able to complete on time or even before schedule, will mean more profits to the main contractor.

This can only be achieved with competent manpower, minimial machine downtime, sufficient resources and dedicated management team.

02

Construction Method and Sequence

Most main contractors constantly need to perform under time and space constraints environment. Project team will want their ERSS contractor to be their valuable team player.

The ERSS contractor needs to have the experience and knowledge to propose the most efficient construction methods and sequence, to ensure construction projects can be completed safely and on time.

03

Quality

Quality can be classified under 3 general areas:
a) Trained, certified and competent manpower will bring about quality workmanship.
b) Quality materials will ensure compliance to design parameters and safe works.
c) Well maintained machineries and equipment contribute to quality installation works.

04

Price and Budget

This is the last and most important area that many main contractors ponder before deciding which sub contractor to engage.

However, this is not difficult for main contractors that appreciates value over prices. Value are build from proper schedule, sufficient resources, fastest method and sequence, with quality work.

All comes with well deserved costs. This applies to all clients awarding projects to contractors. Working with lower budget is definitely possible, but not without giving up some of the key areas.
